Hit Rock Songs
HoriPro is honored to publish some of the great songs in rock & roll history. Via its acquisitions of the Jerry Reed and Tickson Music catalogs, HoriPro publishes or co-publishes classic hit rock songs by such legendary artists as Elvis Presley, the Byrds and Gram Parsons.
Elvis Presley
Renowned singer/writer/guitarist Jerry Reed wrote three songs which were recorded by Elvis Presley: “Guitar Man,” “U.S. Male” and “Talk About The Good Times.” Reed initially had a country hit as an artist with “Guitar Man”, but then it was covered by Presley. Soon after, the song became a rock classic and a pop hit single, when Presley sensationally performed “Guitar Man” on his acclaimed ’68 Comeback Special on NBC-TV. Notably, it was during this same period that Presley also recorded “U.S. Male” (which became a chart hit) and “Talk About The Good Times.”
The Byrds
The Byrds were one of the most acclaimed, influential rock bands of the 1960s. In their early period, the group brilliantly combined rock and folk music to forge a new style and sound. Then in the mid-to-late ‘60s, the Byrds blazed new musical territory, playing a vital role in pioneering country-rock and psychedelic rock. Throughout the ‘60s, the group enjoyed tremendous commercial success, with many chart-topping hit singles and albums.
One of the Byrds’ most famous and enduring songs is “So You Want To Be A Rock ‘N’ Roll Star,” which was written by two of the group’s founding members, Roger McGuinn and Chris Hillman. Other classic Byrds songs co-published by HoriPro include “Eight Miles High” (by Roger McGuinn, Gene Clark & David Crosby), “Mr. Spaceman” and “Five D (Fifth Dimension)” (by McGuinn), “I’ll Feel A Whole Lot Better” (Clark), and “It Won’t Be Wrong” (McGuinn & Harvey Gerst). Other noteworthy Byrds songs include “Have You Seen Her Face” and “Time Between” by Chris Hillman.
Gram Parsons
Considered by many music critics as the father of country-rock, Gram Parsons (who passed away in 1973 at age 26) is a legendary figure who pioneered the concept of a rock band playing country music, and his music & songs seamlessly blended the two genres. As a member of the Byrds, the Flying Burrito Brothers and as a solo artist, he created a rich body of work which remains very relevant and influential to this day. Included on this HoriPro catalog are such classic Parsons songs as “Return Of The Grievous Angel,” “Ooh Las Vegas,” “$1,000 Wedding” and “Big Mouth Blues.”
Other hit songs
In addition, another noteworthy rock hit song published by HoriPro is “Satisfied Man,” a Southern-rock hit in the 1980s for popular band Molly Hatchet.
